Whatever your decor is, this lacquered panel with its palm tree motif in 3 sections is likely to find its place. Designed and hand crafted in one of our Siem Reap workshops in Cambodia, it will bring a touch of Asia into your home.
Lacquer has been used for centuries to embellish everyday objects or to create decorations for their own sake. In Cambodia the art of lacquering had all but died out, but with the help of a training program born in 1992, the Chantiers-Écoles de formation professionnelle, youngsters have been taught the skills in order to re-establish it amongst the traditional crafts of the country.
The Cambodian style of lacquer is slightly different from other Asian styles, being more matte, and rather more sober. The end product has a distinctive satiny, rather than brilliant, finish. This picture has a base of rubber wood, which was then coated with one, or several, primer layers of lacquer to smooth out the imperfections and provide a good surface for painting. The artisan then applied further layers of lacquer to enhance the colors of this piece. This three-panel piece has the charm of being both traditional oriental and modern in aspect, and will make a striking addition to your wall space.
